Solitary palm, trunk is grayish brown, very fat and bulging at the base and tapering upward like a bottle, ringed with slightly conspicuous scars. The leaf sheath is green, smooth and the leaves are pinnate, arched, rather stiff, up to 2m long. The leaflets are arranged in V formation, up to 45cm long, with acute apex. Flowers are borne below the leaves. Fruit is ellipsoid, about 3cm in diameter.
