Genus of about 300 species of upright bulbous. Irises are grown mainly for their colorful, often spectacular flowers. A few are evergreen, but most are deciduous, dying back completely or to a fan of short leaves. Some are dormant in summer. Most irises flower from spring to summer. Some, mostly bearded hybrids, are flowering again in the same year.
